It was the performance everyone was waiting for. The closing song of the evening. Madonna's triumphant return to the BRIT Awards after 20 years. The icing on the musical cake. And no wonder she was nervous as she instagramed before the show:
Yes...........shitting myself. Not gonna lie! Even though #bitchimmadonna ️#rebelheart
And indeed it was a triumphant return. But not exactly the way we all had imagined. Madonna's performance of "Living For Love" last night at London's O2 Arena took on a different that expected course. Just at the beginning of her mini-show, after the line "I let down my guard" her long black cape was supposed to be pulled off her back by her Minotaur dancers. But it all went wrong and Madonna never got to sing "I fell into your arms" as at that moment the too tightly tied cape pulled her off the stairs of her bullfight ring. It looked quite dramatic. She fell down on her back but almost immediately stood up and continued her performance like a true professional despite the pain and shock she must have experienced. Madonna, her voice a bit shaken after the fall, carried on with the song and made it to the end victoriously holding up Minotaur's horns as the song was finished.
After her performance Madonna posted on Instagram:
Armani hooked me up! My beautiful cape was tied too tight! But nothing can stop me and love really lifted me up! Thanks for your good wishes! I'm fine! ️#livingforlove
Of course the Internet erupted with comments and many stars sent their support to the Queen including Cher who tweeted:
Heard Madonna Fell On Stage. This is Something WE ALL DREAD!! MADGE, I GIVE U PROPS, U R a CHAMP 4 FINISHING YOUR SONG!! HOPE U R UNHURT
And Mario Lopez summed it up:
Tell you what though not many artists would continue after that fall. Way to go Madonna for being a trooper & carrying on!
It must have been a horror for somebody like Madonna, as it would have been for any other performer, to go through this on stage. And for many of us who were watching it live it was a dreadful heart stopping moment. But the situation has only proved how professional and dedicated she is. She did not stop but went on as if nothing happened. When she dropped her microphone, everyone who still doubted finally had the proof: she was singing live! It was a display of highest professionalism and all other performers could learn from that. So it really was a triumphant return to the BRITs. If anyone thought that Madonna was not relevant anymore, this was the moment she picked up her crown and put it back on her head.
Carry on, Madonna!
